A Better Flooring Project Starts With What’s Underneath.

Can Your Existing Floor Stay?

Sometimes an existing floor can remain, but the decision starts with an on-site evaluation. Antonio checks the current materials, floor heights, and visible conditions before discussing whether removal or additional preparation is needed. The selected flooring product’s installation requirements also need to be considered.

  1. Different Materials Can Mean Different Heights

A home may have tile in the kitchen, vinyl in living areas, and carpet in bedrooms. When the goal is a continuous floor, the height differences between those surfaces need to be evaluated before choosing an installation approach.

  2. Installing Over Tile Requires Evaluation

Antonio explains that some existing tile floors may be candidates for vinyl installation over them. Uneven tiles, surface irregularities, and differences between rooms can change that decision. A floor that appears level is not, by itself, confirmation that every product can be installed over it.

  3. Some Conditions Become Visible After Removal

An initial visit helps establish the visible conditions. Removing the existing floor can reveal additional layers, adhesive residue, cracks, or uneven areas that were previously concealed.

From Antonio’s experience

Preparation Challenges Antonio Has Encountered

These examples come from Antonio’s descriptions of past residential work. They show how existing conditions can affect the preparation needed before a new finish is installed.

EXPERIENCE 01

Removing Multiple Layers Before a Continuous Vinyl Floor

On a renovation Antonio identified as the Colonial project, the kitchen had two flooring layers while other areas had one. His team removed the existing layers, including underlying tile, and prepared the exposed concrete to remove adhesive residue. Antonio reports that this preparation allowed the new vinyl flooring to continue throughout the home without the previous differences in floor height.

Existing layers can affect both the preparation scope and the finished floor height.

EXPERIENCE 02

Preparing Deteriorated Concrete for Garage Epoxy

Antonio described a garage with cracks, holes, and areas of deteriorating concrete. Before applying a decorative flake epoxy system, he addressed the damaged areas and prepared the surface. The example illustrates why the condition of the concrete needs to be assessed before recommending a coating.

The decorative finish is one part of the project; the underlying surface also needs attention.

What Can Change the Scope of Your Flooring Estimate?

The visible square footage is only part of the conversation. Existing materials and preparation needs can also affect what the project involves.

  • The material selected.
  • The number of existing flooring layers.
  • Whether removal is needed.
  • Adhesive residue or surface irregularities.
  • Differences in height between rooms.
  • Trim and transition requirements.
  • Conditions discovered after removal.

Antonio visits the property to confirm measurements and evaluate visible conditions before preparing an estimate. If removal reveals additional issues, those conditions need to be discussed before the affected work proceeds.

Materials, removal, disposal, leveling, trim and other work are not automatically included. Discuss what is included in your project’s scope.

Before Installation Day: Clear the Work Area

Antonio asks homeowners to clear the work area before installation begins. Remove furniture, personal belongings, and other objects that could interfere with the work so the team can begin in an organized space.

  • Furniture
  • Personal belongings
  • Other objects in the work area

If you need help moving items, discuss it before the project begins rather than assuming it is included.

Planning Your Flooring Project in Port St. Lucie

Can vinyl flooring be installed over existing tile?

Sometimes, after evaluation. Antonio checks the tile, height differences and visible conditions, and considers the selected product’s installation requirements. An apparently level tile floor is not enough to confirm suitability.

Why might flooring need preparation after the old floor is removed?

Removal can expose previously concealed conditions. Additional layers, adhesive residue, cracks or uneven areas may change the preparation needed for the selected flooring.

Can you create a continuous floor when rooms have different materials?

It may be possible, depending on the existing surfaces and selected flooring. Differences in floor height, removal needs and transitions must be evaluated before an installation approach is chosen.

Can a garage with damaged concrete receive an epoxy coating?

Suitability depends on an evaluation of the concrete and the proposed coating. Not all damage can be coated over, and cracks should not automatically be treated as cosmetic. Routine surface preparation does not resolve structural movement; some conditions need assessment beyond flooring preparation.

Do I need to move furniture before installation?

Yes. Antonio asks homeowners to clear furniture, personal belongings and other obstructions from the work area. Discuss any moving assistance before the project starts; it is not automatically included.

Can I buy my own flooring, and is the estimate free?

Yes to both. Imperial can install customer-purchased flooring after suitability review, or help source materials and present samples. On-site visits and estimates are currently free; materials and installation work are not included in that free offer.
